Memorial Day contains multitudes. Most importantly, the federal holiday honors those who lost their lives while fighting for the United States. It’s also the unofficial kickoff to summer, filled with barbecues, beaches, and swimming.

Memorial Day evolved out of remembrances of Civil War soldiers who lost their lives. Sadly, wars continued (and continue) to be fought, so the original holiday expanded. Since 1971, it has always occurred on the last Monday in May.

This year, Memorial Day is today (Monday, May 25).

With the observance’s many components, it can be confusing to remember what remains open and closed on the actual holiday. Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your Monday, whether you have the day off or not.

Is mail delivered on Memorial Day?

Unless a messenger owl from Hogwarts is involved, mail is not delivered on Memorial Day. The United States Postal Service (USPS) is closed. The only exception beyond magic is Priority Mail Express.

Similarly, many UPS locations will be closed, and there will be no pickup or delivery services. The exception is for UPS Express Critical.

FedEx continues the pattern, with no delivery services and modified hours at its physical locations. FedEx Custom Critical operates 365 days a year.

Are banks open on Memorial Day?

Physical brick-and-mortar locations for major banks such as Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo are not open on Memorial Day. But online banking is available. ATMs outside of branches are also a good alternative.

Is the stock market open on Memorial Day?

There is no buying or selling of stocks on Memorial Day. Both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq exchange are closed.

Are schools open on Memorial Day?

The majority of schools will be closed on Memorial Day, giving both students and teachers a day to reflect.

Are pharmacies open on Memorial Day?

Most major pharmacy chains, such as Walgreens and CVS, are open—just in case you need any emergency medication.

It’s a good practice to double-check your preferred location before heading out, as some stores might modify their hours.

Are retail and grocery stores open on Memorial Day?

If you need last-minute barbecue supplies, never fear: Most grocery stores are open with modified hours. This includes Aldi, Trader Joe’s, Kroger, and Whole Foods.

Fair warning, though: Costco will be closed.

Target and Walmart are also open. Just be sure to double-check your store’s hours so you don’t make a wasted trip.

Are restaurants open on Memorial Day?

Yes. Most restaurants are open for the observance. Some are even offering deals, as Food Network reports.

Benihana is gifting a free entrée to all veterans, active-duty service members, reservists, and first responders. All you have to do is dine in; show a military ID, veteran ID, or proof of employment; and purchase an appetizer from May 22 to May 25.

Everyone can get a deal from Firehouse Subs. Participating locations are offering a buy-one, get-one-half-off deal on sandwiches from May 22 to May 25.

During that same period, doughnut lovers can get a dozen Original Glazed Krispy Kreme doughnuts for $2 with the purchase of any regular-price dozen or 16-count mini doughnuts. There is a two-per-customer limit in person and a one-per-customer limit online. Be sure to use the code BOGO2.
