Southern California college students and college staged a walkout at their center college in protest of the Temecula Valley Unified Faculty District’s coverage that enables transgender ladies in loos and locker rooms.

Throughout class on Tuesday, students, parents and faculty members at James L. Day Center Faculty walked out to protest in opposition to the district policy that affirms that transgender college students can entry loos and locker rooms “in line with a scholar’s gender identification.”

For the reason that begin of the brand new school yr, a scholar who identifies as feminine has been utilizing the women’ locker room, mother and father report.

The Board Policy 5145.31: “Religious or Mental Health-Related Accommodations” does supply ladies two “outs,” that are both to file a religious-belief lodging or a mental-health lodging.

However mother and father on the protest informed the California Household Council that neither possibility is appropriate. They don’t wish to label their daughter with a psychological well being situation for wanting privateness or declare a religious exemption to keep away from boys dressing in ladies’ locker rooms, mother and father added. As one mother said, “My daughter’s not anxious or sick. She simply deserves a ladies’ locker room.”

Those that attended the protest wore white and pink bracelets that stated “Save Women’ Sports” and held up indicators.

“The scholars have been clear,” stated Sophia Lorey, outreach director of the California Household Council. “This wasn’t about attacking anybody. They need secure, non-public, female-only areas to vary for P.E. The boys who joined have been there to face with the women – to not make bother, simply to say, ‘Defend ladies’ areas.’”

The Heart Sq. reached out to Temecula’s colleges superintendent, Gary Woods, for a remark, however has not obtained a response.

The district stated in a statement that it “respects the rights of scholars and neighborhood members to interact in peaceable expression and meeting,” including California regulation requires that college students “be allowed to take part in sex-segregated applications and have entry to amenities in line with their gender identification. Any revised proposal will take this requirement into consideration whereas addressing the issues raised by college students, mother and father, and the neighborhood.”

Temecula Valley college board members Jen Wiersma and Dr. Joseph Komrosky additionally attended the center college walkout.

Komrosky stated the district’s “mental health and spiritual exemption lodging” framework is the unsuitable device.

“I used to be elected to symbolize the values of the mother and father of my neighborhood, and nearly all of our neighborhood in Temecula have conventional family values,” Komrosky stated. “What’s occurring at this center college, when a organic boy enters the women’ locker room, is something however conventional. It’s social and political activism. I would like each baby to have a superb and secure education. Components of this aren’t secure, and college students really feel their innocence is being robbed. I’ll proceed to combat this ethical battle to defend the innocence of children and empower mother and father.”

TVUSD is predicted to handle Board Coverage 5145.31 and associated privateness measures on the subsequent common board assembly on Sept. 9.
