Silence 95% of spam calls and text scams with these 3 simple tweaks

Spam calls and text scams have evolved from a mild nuisance into a relentless daily tax on our attention. Scammers use neighborhood-spoofing to mimic local area codes and automated text bots to blast out thousands of phony messages all day and night.

Your instinct may be to download a call-blocking app that demands full access to your contacts and charges a $4.99 recurring subscription. But you can tame this scourge without paying a cent or handing over your address book.

Both iOS and Android include powerful, built-in spam-killing toggles that take less than three minutes to configure.

Here’s a quick settings audit to silence the noise.

Mute unknown callers at the system level

Instead of waiting for a spammer to call and manually blocking their spoofed number, tell your phone to ignore any incoming call from a number you’ve never interacted with before.

    • On iPhone: Go to Settings > Phone (or Settings > Apps > Phone), tap Silence and Screen Unknown Callers. Calls from numbers not in your contacts, recent outgoing calls, or Siri Suggestions will automatically go straight to voicemail without ringing your phone.
    • On Android: Open the Phone app, tap the menu icon in the top corner, select Settings > Caller ID & Spam, and turn on Filter Spam Calls. This uses Google’s database to automatically block suspected robocalls.

Quarantine text scams into a separate inbox

Text message scams (smishing) are particularly dangerous because a single accidental link click can expose account credentials. You can route messages from unrecognized numbers out of your main inbox completely.

    • On iPhone: Go to Settings > Messages (or Settings > Apps > Messages), and toggle on Filter Spam under Unknown Senders. This creates a separate tab in your Messages app for unknown numbers and disables notifications for them.
    • On Android: Open Messages, tap your profile icon in the search bar, go to Messages Settings > Protection & Safety Spam, and verify that spam protection is enabled.

    Activate free carrier-level network shields

Your cellular provider maintains a network-level list of active scam call origins. They offer free baseline network filtering, but they rarely turn it on by default.

    • AT&T: Download the free AT&T ActiveArmor app to toggle on network-level spam blocking and nuisance call warnings.
    • Verizon: Open the free Verizon Call Filter app and enable Spam Filter to auto-block high-risk callers.
    • T-Mobile: Dial #662# directly from your phone keypad and hit call to enable Scam Block at the network level, or manage it through the T-Mobile Scam Shield app.

Don’t accept life with a phone that rings six times a day with fake debt collector alerts or suspicious package tracking links. Spending three minutes to lock down your OS settings and activate your carrier’s network filters will eliminate roughly 95% of incoming spam before it ever reaches your screen.
