Audrey Pulvar, deputy mayor of Paris for international relations, on social media. Blames Trump for the 1300 death in France from the Heat Wave “Dear American journalists and social media ‘influencers’: for days, some of you have been criticising and making fun of Paris because the city does not have A/C in every room…OMG, this is so rich!” “As the second-largest emitter of greenhouse gas emissions in the world, you bear a significant amount of responsibility for global warming and the consequences we, in France, are experiencing. Your cities, which are 90 per cent air conditioned, are not unrelated to…

The internet is moving from being search-driven to answer-driven. In the current era of AI-powered search, publishers are watching while their content is scraped and paraphrased by large language models, users hold concerns about not being able to easily opt out of AI features on large platforms, and a couple of Big Tech companies stand to benefit the most from this new paradigm. A common search on Google means coming face-to-face with its AI Overviews, which populate the top of the search page with a summary of key information about the topic searched and links to where the answers came…
About 1 in 6 Americans met the criteria for a substance use disorder in 2024, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. National spending on substance use disorder (SUD) and mental health treatment has grown from roughly $41 billion in 2000 to nearly $140 billion by 2021. And yet only about 1 in 5 of those who needed treatment actually received it. The reasons are real and well-documented: too few providers, too much stigma, too little infrastructure in rural communities. I spend a lot of time with the leaders running behavioral health and SUD organizations across the…
AI has quickly become embedded in our everyday work, from drafting emails to synthesizing research and making decisions. In my roles as a medical doctor and business consultant, I talk to many corporate leaders who are focused on what that means for productivity. But recently, some have been asking a more fundamental question: What does AI use mean for the cognitive health of my workforce? Emerging research suggests this is not a theoretical concern. AI doesn’t just accelerate thinking – it often displaces it. When used passively, AI can weaken memory, judgment, learning, and confidence, and even diminish independent problem-solving.…

In October 1956, when Soviet tanks rolled into Budapest to crush the nascent Hungarian Revolution and the national aspirations it represented, the communist empire seemed at its apex. With a strong leader, a command economy, and an iron will, it seemed undeniable that the West, with all its messy deliberation, would be unable to compete. Yet Zbigniew Brzezinski, then a young Harvard scholar, saw things differently. Fluent in Russian, he had traveled throughout the Soviet Union and was struck by its underlying weakness. In particular, he noticed that barely half the crowd at a soccer game in Soviet Georgia bothered…
How many times have politicians stood before the American people claiming Social Security is “running out of money?” That is the biggest fraud of all. I have said for decades that Social Security is nothing more than a Ponzi scheme. Your payroll taxes are not sitting safely in an account waiting for retirement. They were spent by Washington years ago. The so-called Social Security Trust Fund is filled with government IOUs, not real assets. Every administration kicked the can down the road while pretending there was a trust fund. There never was. They borrowed every dime and spent it on…
SpaceX is beginning to lay the groundwork for an accelerated launch schedule for its Starship spacecraft. The company will begin building a pipeline next month to bring natural gas to its Starbase complex, where it can be processed and converted into liquid methane to fuel the reusable super heavy-lift launch vehicle. Ultimately, that could help the company meet its goal of as many as 25 launches per year, and perhaps allow it to exceed that number. At present, fuel for the rocket has to be transported to the Starbase complex, a process that is both time-consuming and expensive. By running…
Everyone is talking about artificial intelligence as though it is simply the next technology boom. They are missing the bigger picture. The country that controls the chips, the data centers, the electricity, and the manufacturing capacity will hold the strategic advantage for decades. This is no different than steel before World War I or oil during the twentieth century. Nations are no longer competing over cheap labor. They are competing for technological dominance. South Korea has now announced one of the largest industrial investment programs in modern history. President Lee Jae Myung unveiled a national strategy centered on semiconductors, physical…
