Jalapeño salmonella recall: See an updated list of impacted retailers, including Trader Joe’s, Walmart, Whole Foods, Kroger, Target, and more

As concerns around potential salmonella contamination escalate, an additional 20 jalapeño products are being recalled in an updated notice that includes products sold at several major retailers.

Public health officials are concerned that these products may be linked to an ongoing salmonella outbreak that has already affected food sold at popular restaurant chains, including Chipotle Mexican Grill and Qdoba.

However, these food items were sold directly to consumers in popular grocery and retail stores, including Trader Joe’s, Walmart, Whole Foods, and Target. Here’s what you need to know.

    What’s happened?

As Fast Company reported earlier this month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched an investigation into a multistate salmonella outbreak. That outbreak has been linked to jalapeño peppers from Sinaloa, Mexico, that were distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors.

At the time of original reporting, the peppers were known to have been distributed to Chipotle Mexican Grill and Qdoba restaurants, which subsequently pulled the jalapeños from their stores, according to the FDA.

However, the FDA also said that the investigation was ongoing and that it was working to determine whether any of the potentially contaminated jalapeños were sold at grocery stores.

The FDA itself has not yet provided an additional update on the outbreak or other potential products that may be impacted—but one manufacturer of jalapeño products has.

Taylor Fresh Foods issues new recall

On August 9, Taylor Fresh Foods announced a voluntary recall of 20 products that contain jalapeños.

The recall notice was subsequently published on the FDA’s website. According ot the notice, Taylor Fresh Foods is recalling the products because the jalapeños they contain come from a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, that provides jalapeños to Coast Citrus Distributors.

“Taylor Fresh Foods is no longer sourcing products from this farmer and will be filling orders from alternative suppliers,” the recall notice states.

If Taylor Fresh Foods sounds familiar, it’s because the brand is owned by Taylor Farms, a company that has been in the headlines quite a bit this year. Some of its lettuce products are believed to be one of the potential sources of the ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak that is sweeping across part of America, according to the FDA.

Has anyone been harmed by the Salmonella outbreak?

As of the most recent update on the outbreak published on August 5, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says there have been 345 cases of illnesses linked to the outbreak. Of those, 36 individuals have required hospitalization.

Taylor Fresh Foods says that, when it comes to its recalled jalapeño product, the company is not aware of any reported illnesses linked to them.

    What products are being recalled?

This latest recall includes 20 jalapeño products manufactured by Taylor Fresh Foods and sold at multiple grocery and retail stores under multiple brand names—or no brand name at all.
