If you want to know whether a workplace is built for the future, don’t ask the CEO. Ask the woman sprinting to daycare pickup at 5 pm. For the past several years we’ve approached new mothers as workers who need support. Flex schedules. Rooms to pump. Extended leave. Grace when the baby gets sick for the fourth time in as many weeks. All that is important, certainly. But it also may have led us to ask the wrong question. Instead of what do mothers need from work? Maybe we should be asking what can work learn from mothers? {“blockType”:”mv-promo-block”,”data”:{“imageDesktopUrl”:”https://images.fastcompany.com/image/upload/f_webp,q_auto,c_fit/wp-cms-2/2025/11/Girl-Li.png”,”imageMobileUrl”:”https://images.fastcompany.com/image/upload/f_webp,q_auto,c_fit/wp-cms-2/2025/11/souter.png”,”eyebrow”:””,”headline”:”u003Cstrongu003ESubscribe to…

On April 15, we should have marked Polina’s 23rd birthday. But her 18th birthday was the last one we celebrated together. In September 2021, after years of struggling with her mental health, my niece died tragically. No family emerges unchanged from a loss like that. Nearly five years later, ours is still grieving. But grief can also become action. Shortly after Po’s death, we founded The Polina Fund, through which our family and community work to support young women facing mental health and substance abuse challenges, and to help destigmatize these struggles before more lives are lost. Polina’s too-short life…
The baton has been passed. Nearly two weeks after the catastrophic explosion of Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket, NASA is moving full force into the next phase of its race to the moon, announcing the Artemis III crew and outlining mission goals. Next year, NASA astronauts Randy Bresnik, Andre Douglas, and Frank Rubio, and the European Space Agency’s Luca Parmitano, will spend two weeks in orbit testing maneuverability and compatibility between the space capsule and two landers to help ready Artemis IV, the first crewed mission to the Lunar South Pole in 2028. “Artemis III will be unlike anything we’ve…
While SpaceX’s IPO captures global financial headlines, a high-stakes space ecosystem has been quietly emerging. By shifting the goalposts from Mars to the moon and low Earth orbit, a broad coalition of smaller players have been investing in and building the infrastructure for a new space economy, and they’re poised to profit from the next century in orbit. Mars is dead. It’s all about the moon Elon Musk was once obsessed with colonizing Mars. Now, like almost everyone else, he’s focused on the more-attainable moon. (SpaceX’s IPO prospectus mentions the Moon 74 times in; Mars, 63.) “We believe the development…
Would you zap your brain to treat depression? In December, the Food and Drug Administration cleared a device that uses mild electrical currents to stimulate the brain, marking a shift in how the condition could be treated. Known as transcranial direct-current stimulation, or tDCS, the technology is designed for at-home use, potentially offering a more accessible alternative to traditional therapies, according to The New York Times. The approval applies to a headset made by Swedish company Flow Neuroscience, which has been studying the approach for years. While tDCS itself has existed for more than two decades and has been available in…
Bill Gates is the largest investor in vaccines and there’s a pandemic. Bill Gates is the largest owner of land in America and there’s a food crisis. Bill Gates is the largest investor in lab grown baby milk and there’s a baby formula crisis. pic.twitter.com/bgtG7LqV7Y — illuminatibot (@iluminatibot) May 24, 2026 People have become so conditioned to thinking in partisan terms that they miss the larger issue entirely. The question is not whether Bill Gates is a good person or a bad person. The question is why one individual continually appears at the center of industries that later become critical…
Want more housing market stories from Lance Lambert’s ResiClub in your inbox? Subscribe to the ResiClub newsletter. As federal policymakers push for restrictions on institutional ownership of single-family homes, many firms operating in the single-family rental (SFR) and build-to-rent (BTR) spaces are pulling back on future acquisitions and developing rental communities. One industry insider explained it this way to ResiClub: “The unknown is the hardest part. If you don’t know the rules of the game, what do you do?” To better understand how institutional groups are responding, ResiClub surveyed 14 institutional SFR owner/operators, developers, and investors between April 28 and…
UK Defence Secretary John Healey suddenly resigned because the government cannot find the money to fund military commitments. In his resignation letter, he openly accused Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the Treasury of refusing to commit the resources needed to defend the country at a time of rising geopolitical tensions. When a defence minister quits claiming the government cannot adequately fund national security, that is a warning sign far beyond politics. It is a signal that the financial reality has finally collided with political promises. Britain’s economic condition is far worse than many appreciate. Government debt has climbed above £3…
Imagine your inbox empty, your calendar clear, your to-dos checked. With undivided attention, you and your senior team head into the conference room, ready to address the big issues over a daylong meeting. Big issues like determining how you’ll respond to AI, setting your three-to-five-year strategy or nailing down how you’ll attract and develop future talent. Keep imagining. Because that day isn’t coming. The reality looks more like this: you’ve got 60 minutes to plan strategy, in a meeting that took six weeks to schedule. Right before it started, you learned about the crisis of the day. Tonight you have…
